Kevin Trent has been the head coach of the Ashland Barracudas since 2000. He began competing for summer leagues, year round teams, and high school teams in Lynchburg during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. He graduated from University of Virginia with degrees in history and psychology (1994) and a masters in Social Studies Education (1996). He has taught social studies at Patrick Henry since 1996. Not only has Kevin coached summer league, but also the PH Swim Team from 1996-2010, and year round programs from 1996-2002. He is proudly coaching his second generation of swimmers. With this much experience, he has built a program that focuses on kids having a great time, buying into team traditions, making summer friends, supporting philanthropy, and understanding that they represent themselves and their team whenever they practice or compete. When he’s not thinking about history or swimming, he loves to travel the world visiting places like London and Sao Paulo. He likes watching college sports and hanging out with his family. Asked what his favorite swimming stroke is, he replied, “Backstroke...you can breathe whenever you want.”
Jenny Yonce has been a part of the Ashland Swim Team since its beginning! Born and raised in Ashland, she and her siblings swam for the Atlee Swim Team. After she and her family helped to get Carter Park Pool built, she joined Ashland Swim Team as a swimmer in its opening year in the 1990s. She swam for the high school Hanover Swim Team and then the first year of Patrick Henry High School’s swim team. She began coaching for the Ashland Swim team in 2001 and has also coached for the Patrick Henry YMCA swim team. Jenny graduated from Virginia Tech in 2004 and VCU with her masters in 2008. She has been a school counselor in Henrico County Public Schools since 2009. She loves swimming freestyle and butterfly and looks forward to the coaches’ relay at Champs. For fun, you can find her cheering for her sons at the baseball field, watching the VT football team, and relaxing at Emerald Isle. She loves working with the youngest swimmers and watching their progress throughout the season. She’s also a proud aunt and mom to 12 Barracuda swimmers. At the pool, you’ll often hear her referred to as “Coach Aunt Jenny” by friends and family alike.
Curran Henry began swimming competitively at just six years old. He’s been a Barracuda since he was 8! He swam for the Barracudas from 2002-2012 and then became a coach in 2015. Curran attended Christopher Newport University where he was the swim team president and coached from 2014-2015. In college, Curran majored in Biochemistry and is currently a senior scientist at PPD. When he’s not coaching or being a scientist, he likes to hang out with his friends, go on adventures and hikes, hang out at the beach or river, play video games and watch and root for the New York Giants football team. Curran’s favorite stroke is the breaststroke and his favorite event is the 50 freestyle. Curran’s goal for the Barracudas this season is to help as many people drop their times and improve and to make swim team enjoyable for everyone!
Kate Balut is a 2025 graduate of Patrick Henry where she was a Hanover Scholar and a three sport athlete. At Patrick Henry, she was as an All-State swimmer and also a vital part of the volleyball and soccer programs. She just finished her first year at the University of South Carolina where she is studying retail management. She is loving cheering for the Gamecocks! Kate is a legend on our team, having competed for the Barracudas for over a dozen summers. She is a team record holder and a GRAL Champion. She is among the most successful, most popular, and most respected swimmers in our program's history. Her favorite stroke is breaststroke because it is her best and is the calmest.
Duke Flanagan was a competitor for the Barracudas for well over a decade, qualifying for Champs throughout his time with our team, mentoring younger swimmers, and being a part of numerous team record relay teams. Duke is a 2025 Honors Graduate of Patrick Henry, where he was a part of the music, ROTC, and tennis programs, a state meet qualifier in swimming, and a three-time state champion in volleyball. He enjoys playing sports with friends and music. Currently Duke is fulfilling duties as a Guardsman in the Virginia National Guard, and he will attend Roanoke College, where he will continue his volleyball career by competing for the Maroons. His favorite stroke is freestyle because he likes to dive as far as he can to go fast.
